Working Safely

16 October 2025 by Anne Whatley-Dale

October is WorkSafe Month and I’m proud to be involved once again.

It’s easy to think that working safely is only about what we do at work – or getting to and from work. To me, though, it’s always about safety beginning before we wake up and ending after we go to sleep. When you add the importance of quality sleep, it’s a continuous loop.

It’s also easy to think work only covers working for yourself or someone else to earn an income. There’s also a broader definition that includes being a student, carer, volunteer, running a home, managing a family. All a part of why I focus on work-health-life wellness.

At the core of wellness and wellbeing – and safety, by extension – is emotional heath and fitness, our sense of self and how we play our roles in life, and financial wellness1. There’s another component too – living present.

Being present, and engaged, with where you are, who you’re with, and what you’re doing also plays a bigger part in working safely than we may realise: until something happens. It could be anything from an unhealthy conversation with a residual, ongoing, impact, or an accident or injury that impacts your ability to work. I was reminded of that a few weeks ago when I had a running accident, fractured my wrist and am now writing one-handed!

Whatever you want to achieve, in whatever area or capacity you work, WorkSafe Month is a great reminder that part of a successful approach to working safely is visible, like High Vis vests, Stand Up desks and Employee Assistance Programs. The other part is about how each of us responds and reacts to the conversations and situations we are involved in through the course of a day.

Each of us has the opportunity to influence another person’s day, across any role we play in life. I hope WorkSafe Month serves as a reminder of that which extends into every other day of the year.

Wishing you success and wellness in life and work!

Anne
